It was in 1986 when Dr. Rogelio R. Garcia together with his wife Mrs. Janet Sarino-Garcia decided to put up a school in their vacant property along Emilio Aguinaldo Highway, Bacoor, Cavite. At first, the thought of putting up a hospital in Mrs. Garcia’s hometown of Bacoor was very attractive proposition. As healthcare professionals and owner of QC St. Agnes General Hospital they both had the experience and knowledge of running a hospital. However, they noticed that the community had a greater need for an institution of learning that provided quality education. Bacoor then was still a very rural community with few private schools to service a growing population of migrant families from nearby Manila moving into the new real estate developments in the area.
In 1987 the school opened its door to Bacoor’s youth initially offering preschool education. As time progressed, elementary and high school education was later offered. In a short span of time, the school’s population rapidly grew. Its population peaked by 1994 with 1,400 students. As early as 1988, students of St. Mark had the distinct advantage of being computer literate as compared to other similar private schools.
1992 however was turning point in the story of CSSM’s success as the Department of Education decided to deregulate the establishment of schools in the Philippines. This led to a sudden increase in the number of schools in the area slowly diminishing the school’s market share as these schools offered more proximity to residential areas. By 1999, the school’s enrollment stood at around 800 students. At this point, Mrs. Garcia’s youngest daughter, Mrs. Patricia Garcia-Arias was tasked to take charge of the school’s overall operations. Rapid changes took place immediately from the improvement and renovation of many of the school facilities to improvements in instruction and the grading system. The school was transformed almost instantly and has since adopted the philosophy of “Kaizen”. CSSM was now a learning community in continuous pursuit of excellence. At present, CSSM’s enrollment has established at 500-600 students. A far cry from what it was 10 years ago but then again, this is a number that the administrators now prefer to ensure the delivery of quality education.
In the course of its short history, it must be noted that CSSM also offered tertiary courses. It was Dr. Garcia’s dream for CSSM to offer College education. However, he was not able to see this dream with his untimely death in 1990. Taking on the stewardship of the institution, Mrs. Garcia labored hard to fulfill her beloved husbands dream. Soon thereafter, CSSM began to offer college (i.e. Bachelor of Science in Computer, Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Bachelor of Science in Education) and vocational courses (Midwifery, Computer Secretarial, Office Management and Hotel and Restaurant Management). However, growing competition in the community and lack of demand for certain courses led to the decision to cease college operations for the meantime. This was in 2000 when CSSM graduated it last college student. It was imperative then that to ensure the delivery of quality of education and the continued operation of the school, CSSM had to realign its efforts towards strengthening its core competence that lay in the provision of basic education. Standards had to be reviewed and upgraded in order to meet the initial expectations of our founders. Focus was necessary to ensure that quality of graduates was not sacrificed. Today, five years later, we have re-emerged into a new institution with a value system unparalleled in the years past. A new strength of purpose and a well-established system of operations ensures success in the time to come.
